Nobody had a reason beyond the honest one: that is how it had always been.
The whiteboard had been drawn the same way for eleven years. Columns for trucks, rows for hours, magnets for jobs.
The apprentice asked why the board was sorted by truck instead of by neighborhood. Nobody had a reason beyond the honest one: that is how it had always been.
The experiment ran for three weeks. Jobs were grouped by geography first, then assigned. The crew kept its own notes, which is the only reason we can print anything here at all.
The result was smaller than the story people tell about it and larger than anyone expected: less driving, fewer late arrivals, and one fewer overtime hour per tech per week.
The kid still gets the worst truck. He says that is fine.
